While most high school students are enjoying a break from the books this summer, there is a ton of hands-on, work-based learning happening right now at the LPSD Career Magnet Center. In addition to Fast Forward Summers internships in carpentry and culinary arts, we have 14 Diesel students hard at work at CMC taking dual enrollment courses through Fletcher Technical Community College. We recently caught them in the shop sharpening their basic welding skills. Check them out in action!

An older male instructor, wearing glasses, a dark blue button-down short-sleeve shirt with a name badge, blue jeans, work boots, and a welding helmet pushed up on his head, stands on the right. He is writing a small diagram on a large black vertical metal divider panel with a piece of chalk. In the foreground and center, two students stand with their backs mostly to the camera, listening to the instructor. The student in the center wears a light blue button-down denim shirt, blue jeans, brown work boots, and a protective welding mask on his head. To his left, another student is partially visible, also wearing a welding mask. The workshop environment features concrete flooring, exposed brick and block walls, overhead fluorescent lighting, and welding equipment visible in the lower-left foreground.
A horizontal photograph of a student welding in a dark shop station. The student is positioned on the left side of the frame, seen from the back and side, hunched over a metal workbench. They are wearing a long-sleeve grey shirt, heavy protective welding gloves, and a safety helmet. A bright, intense white and golden light glows from the point of welding directly in front of the student, illuminating the concrete block wall behind the workbench. To the right of the glowing weld, a flexible overhead exhaust vent hose hangs down toward the station. Small metal hand tools rest on the dark surface of the workbench next to a vertical iron welding jig holding metal plates. The rest of the foreground and surrounding workshop booth are cast in dark shadows.
A horizontal, wide-angle photograph capturing a row of industrial welding stations in a high school or technical workshop. Two students are actively welding in separate, adjacent booths. On the left, a student in a dark long-sleeve shirt stands facing away from the camera, hunched over their workbench. To their right, a second student is seated or leaning over their workstation. Both students are obscured by extremely bright, brilliant bursts of white and blue welding light that create powerful lens flares extending across the booths. Smoke gathers near the ceiling above their stations. In the foreground, several rolling industrial carts hold welding machines, heavy gas cylinders (including one tan and one brown cylinder with mesh netting), and wrapped black and green hoses. Overhead, fluorescent lights illuminate each individual booth, and thick, black corrugated exhaust duct tubes run vertically up to the ceiling to vent fumes. A brilliant, intense white and blue light with a purple lens flare bursts from the point of welding, illuminating the station and generating a small cloud of smoke. In the lower-left foreground, a blue Miller industrial machine is visible, with a white trucker hat resting on top of it. A thick black cable runs from the student's welding tool down to the concrete floor. The background features a worn, light-colored concrete block wall. A large, flexible grey exhaust vent hose hangs down vertically above the student's head to capture smoke. A yellow and black DeWalt tool and loose welding rods rest on the bench to the right of the glowing weld.
A horizontal, wide-angle photograph capturing a spacious row of five industrial welding stations aligned along a wall in a technical training workshop. Several students are positioned inside their individual booths with their backs to the camera, working at their respective workbenches. In the middle booth, an intense, brilliant white and blue flare of welding light bursts outward, illuminating the center of the room. The other students are in various stages of preparing or working in darker booths. In the foreground on the concrete floor, a series of mobile rolling carts are spaced out in front of the stations. Each cart holds industrial welding machinery, thick wrapped cables, and heavy, vertical brown gas cylinders. To the far left, a metal utility table holds scraps of iron pipe, and to the far right, a broom and dustpan rest against the wall. Near the ceiling, an intricate network of metal pipes and thick, black corrugated exhaust duct tubes run down vertically into each booth to vent fumes under fluorescent strip lighting.

Middle and high school students representing Lafourche Parish School District kicked off their summer in a big way! Earlier this month, they traveled to Natchitoches to attend the annual Louisiana Association of Student Councils (LASC) Summer Leadership Workshop at Northwestern State University, where they mastered effective leadership and meeting skills, communication techniques, group dynamics and team building. They had a great time networking with other student leaders from around the state and are returning with lots of new ideas to kick off the upcoming school year.

The LPSD legacy ran deep at this year’s workshop with more than a dozen of our Student Council alumni returning to Natchitoches as counselors and support staff. We are so proud to see our former students giving back and helping to mentor and shape the next generation of leaders in our schools and community. Congratulations to recent THS grad Cullen Murillo, who was honored with LASC’s Mr. Phil Legacy Scholarship. The future of Lafourche Parish is incredibly bright!

Peep Our Progress 🛠️

The home side stadium repairs at Thibodaux High School are wrapping up. Repairs on the visitor side will be completed following the 26-27 football season.

All three of our high school stadiums are undergoing vital structural concrete repairs and waterproofing upgrades to preserve and protect the facility. These improvements will help prevent future deterioration, enhance safety, and extend the service life of the stadium for students, athletes, and the community.

Thank you for your patience and support as we work to provide a safer, stronger environment for our students, community and visitors.

An outdoor shot showing maintenance and concrete repair work underneath a large stadium grandstand structure. In the center right, a worker wearing a bright orange high-visibility shirt and a hard hat stands in the yellow basket of an elevated JCB scissor lift. They are using a tool to patch or work on a thick concrete support pillar beneath the tiered stadium seating. To the far left, a red boom lift basket is extended high up near a slanted, vertical concrete support column. In the foreground, a tall, yellow mobile scaffolding tower stands on the concrete ground. Behind a chain-link security fence at the base of the grandstands, a purple building structure is visible with the words "FIGHTING TIGERS" painted on it in large yellow block letters. The sky overhead is overcast and cloudy.
A wide-angle, low-angle shot of a large, empty outdoor stadium grandstand under a cloudy sky. The perspective looks up and across a wide, smooth grey concrete walkway or concourse area in the foreground. To the right, tiers of grey concrete bleacher seating with long metal benches rise steeply toward the top of the stadium. A stainless steel safety railing with chain-link mesh panels separates the walkway from the seating area. In the upper-left background, a two-story press box with large glass windows sits at the top of the grandstands, next to a tall stadium light pole.
A close-up shot of a thick, vertical concrete support pillar beneath a stadium showing visible repair work. The left side and upper edge of the pillar have been patched with fresh, smooth, dark grey concrete, contrasting with the aged, weathered off-white concrete of the original structure. Fine surface cracks are visible on the older, unpatched sections of the column. In the background behind the pillar, a cluttered under-tier storage area is visible through a chain-link fence. The area contains stacked metal scaffolding pieces, large rectangular black road cases or panels, and folded tarps resting on a wheeled cart.
