I am in National Honor Society, Student Council, and The Pride of South Lafourche Marching Tarpon Band. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned while being a student in our district? The most important lesson I have learned is that teachers are more than just the school district. Most teachers will help you outside of class and give you extra support for you to achieve the highest you can. What is your favorite school-related memory? My favorite school-related memory would have to be having Lonnie Rousse as my teacher. I had him for physical science and geometry. The amount of stories he would tell us will always be ingrained to my brain. What do you like most about your school? I love the sense of community our school builds inside and outside. If anyone needs help, someone will always be there to support you no matter what. It may be a teacher, student, or administration that will help you figure out your next steps. For today’s #SundaySpotlight, the Lafourche Schools Spotlight is on student Madyson Cutrer.

Madyson is the daughter of Jackie Cutrer and JeanPaul Doucet and is a senior at South Lafourche High School where she is active in National Honor Society, Student Council and the Pride of South Lafourche Marching Tarpon Band. She was recently honored with an Outstanding Citizen Award from the Lafourche Parish Council for her efforts in organizing a fundraiser for a very special teacher who was diagnosed with cancer. She also received the Sergeant Martinus Mitchum Leadership Award from the Future Law Enforcement Youth Academy (FLEYA), a partnership between FBI New Orleans, the Tulane University Police Department, and the Louisiana Chapter of the FBI National Academy

“Madyson brings a quiet confidence and a steady kindness that lifts people up,” said SLHS principal Alison Chiasson “Her presence makes our high school a better, more welcoming place each day,”

“Madyson's compassion has had a lasting impact on our school and community,” Chiasson added. “In the face of her teacher's battle with cancer, she stepped forward with initiative and heart, leading meaningful fundraising efforts that brought people together for a greater cause. Being recognized this school year with the Outstanding Citizen Award is a reflection of her selflessness, leadership, and unwavering kindness.”

According to Madyson, her drive to give back is rooted in the mentorship she has found within her school. She credits her growth to a transformative bond with a teacher who has taught her the value of community, leadership and service.

“Jacob Griffin has made such a huge impact on my life,” Madyson said. “He joined as a teacher my freshman year, and we saw each other grow. I had him my freshman, junior, and senior year for completely different subjects. My junior year was when we created a bond that I have never had with a teacher.”

“He taught me the importance of legacy and community, while going through the most stressful times,” Madyson added. “He was always there when I needed someone to talk to and give advice back. With his support, I joined Student Council, National Honor Society, and I even created a fundraiser to support one of our teachers who is going through cancer. He taught me the importance of moving on when life gives you the opportunity. He has taught me so many other meaningful lessons that I will carry on with me.”

Madyson’s mom, Jackie, says she is immensely proud of her daughter’s accomplishments and unwavering determination and is confident that her contributions will have a positive and lasting impact.

“Madyson’s passion for volunteerism, along with her leadership skills and maturity, are truly remarkable for someone her age,” Jackie shared. “Her passion for law began at a young age, and she will be attending Louisiana State University this fall to study political science in the 3+3 law program. I am so proud to be her mother, and I have no doubt that her impact on this world will leave it better than she found it.”

Madyson is a shining example of what it means to lead with compassion and heart. Please join us in honoring her for her selflessness, her leadership, and the bright future she is building for herself and others. We can’t wait to see her change the world!
