Throughout the month of February, we’ve been featuring outstanding leaders within our district for their exceptional commitment to community service and advancing educational opportunities for the children of Lafourche Parish. Today, our final #SundaySpotlight of Black History Month shines brightly on Myron Wright.

Myron has been representing the people of District 1 as their elected school board member for over three years. He is also an accomplished author, motivational speaker and a business instructor at Fletcher Technical Community College. His book, “Overcomer: The Life of Myron D. Wright,” tells his own story of perseverance and determination following a life-altering football injury during his sophomore year of high school.

A graduate of Thibodaux High School, Myron earned an Associate of General Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Nicholls State University. He earned a Master of Business Administration from Southern University and A&M College in 2016.

“Mr. Myron Wright, in his first term as Lafourche Parish School District 1 representative, brings his unique life experience to the School Board,” said Board President Dr. Dennis Guillot. “It is clear that Myron's desire is that all children can receive a high-quality student-centered education in a nurturing environment where every student can grow and experience success academically, socially and emotionally. Myron's commitment is evident by his support of school district initiatives that give students the tools and access to high-quality instructional resources to enhance student learning and drive success while offering an environment to develop students into productive citizens.”

As a school board member and college professor, seeing students grow and succeed is what Myron enjoys most about working in education.

“There is a great sense of joy and satisfaction watching students achieve, graduate, and impact society once they have left the classroom,” he said. “With colleagues, I enjoy the shared commitment of collaborating with individuals who, despite differing personal opinions, share a core value of striving for student success.”

Greg Cook, LPSD Director of Child Welfare and Attendance, has known Myron since he was a student in the district and says talking about him is easy because he speaks of him so often.

“From how he explained why he didn’t throw the ball on the bootleg to practicing pull-up jump shots until his arms ached,” Cook shared. “But those stories from his youth hold nary a candle to those he has written as a man. Myron is a man living in his purpose and by doing so, he gives others belief that they can do the same.”

“The stories of his perseverance are well documented but few know that before he completed any of his college degrees, he was working to improve the lives of those around him by establishing the Myron Wright Foundation,” Cook added. “His foundation has provided scholarships, donated to any and every worthy community event and even sponsored athletic teams.  And even then, he was always looking for ways to do more for the children in his community.  This was accomplished with the M.D. Wright Academic Center where students of all ages are provided academic support.  He donates his time, speaking at schools and local community events where he expounds on the value of education and belief in yourself.  He is a genuine, determined, visionary with a servant spirit.  I truly hope that he continues to create more stories that uplift those around him.”

Myron Wright's life is a testament to the power of perseverance and purpose. His unique ability to turn personal challenges into a source of motivation for others ensures that the students of Lafourche Parish have the support and inspiration needed to succeed. Please join us in celebrating Myron for his extraordinary service and dedication to his community and the Lafourche Parish School District.
