Today’s #SundaySpotlight is the second of Black History Month, where we’re celebrating leaders within our district for their commitment to serving our community and advancing educational opportunities for the children of Lafourche Parish. Today we shine the Lafourche Schools Spotlight on Keena Lewis.

Keena is the ninth grade professional school counselor at Thibodaux High School. She has been a dedicated employee of the Lafourche Parish School District for 24 years, including four years at PASS and 20 years at THS.

A native of Larose, Keena graduated from South Lafourche High School in 1991 and Dillard University in New Orleans in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. She earned a Master of Arts in psychological counseling from Nicholls State University in 1998.

Freshman year sets the tone for a student’s high school career, so having a caring counselor truly committed to student success can help ease the transition. Keena has a unique talent for helping bridge the gap between middle school and the larger campus and increased academic expectations of high school.

“Ms. Lewis is a compassionate listener for our students,” said THS principal Rebecca Hebert.  “She is a valuable transition mentor for our incoming 9th graders.”

“Ms. Keena Lewis is affectionately known by both current and former students as ‘Mama Keena,’” said THS librarian Melissa Shaddock. “She is someone who listens without judgement, offers wise guidance, and creates a safe space for every student, faculty, and staff who enters her office. Keena goes above and beyond to support students emotionally and academically, making every child feel seen, heard, and valued. This support makes her a blessing for our THS family.”

Please join us in thanking Keena for her heart-centered service to the Lafourche Parish School District and for the vital role she plays in empowering students to overcome obstacles and realize their full potential. Whether she’s providing "Mama Keena" wisdom or helping a freshman find their footing, her influence resonates far beyond the classroom.
