Title III - ELL Overview

The goal of Title III is to help ensure that all English Language Learners have the opportunity to obtain and reach their potential in the classroom.

Lafourche Parish Title III...
-Identifies the educational and language needs of the ELL student based on their language proficiency
-Helps educators set goals for improving the language proficiency of all ELL students in the parish
-Helps to develop programs for each individual ELL student in order to support/supplement mainstream instruction
-Measures student progress through reporting, LEAP, iLEAP, ELPA21
-Assists educators in developing academic accommodation plans to assist ELL students in the mainstream classroom
-Promotes ELL parental involvement through reading, math, study skills, homework and organizational workshops for students and parents

What can Title III do for my ELL student?
Title III provides these resources to ELL students and their teachers:

  • Rosetta Stone
  • Imagine Learning
  • Smarty Ants
  • Electronic Translators in Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese and Spanish
  • Quarterly Professional Development for Regular Education Teachers
  • English-Spanish Interpreter
  • Language Proficiency Testing for new students
  • Funds available for the purchase of classroom resources to aid ELL students
  • Dictionaries and Pictionaries in a variety of languages
  • 4 ELL teachers
  • 4 Para Professionals

How is my ELL student identified?
-All students are enrolled at Lafourche Parish Schools regardless of documentation or visa status
-During enrollment, parents complete a home language survey in their native language indicating what languages are spoken by the student
-Students are assessed using the LAS Links Language Proficiency Model to determine their language abilities
-Students are then placed in the appropriate programs to improve their language proficiency
